Breaking It in Right

Breaking It in Right

Host, Hook The Future

It’s always an adventure with my Carolina Skiff. I had just picked up my new 218 DLV, with a Mercury 150 4-stroke and a Float-On Trailer. But it was time to break in the engine and do a shakedown on the boat, so we hit the road shooting a new season of episodes for Hook The Future.

I couldn’t wait to get on the water and loaded the boat with a little bit of fishing gear and the cameras, just in case we had the chance to get some footage of the new boat out on the water. After launching at a ramp near my home waters, I ran into long-time fishing buddies Austin, Brandon, and Malachy.

“What are you guys doing here,” I yelled out.

“Hammering the flounder,” said Austin. “Come here and I’ll show you.”

Austin showed me a picture on his phone of two big doormats they had caught the day before.

“We’ll you guys owe me a fishing trip anyway,” I responded.

After clearing the plan with their parents, the boys hopped onboard to show me where the fish are.

Since we were on the spot and fishing, it was time to pull out the cameras.

The guys had already cast netted live finger mullet that morning, so we anchored in position across from the boat ramp. The boys start telling me about all of their recent catches and how they’ve been combing every inch of shoreline in search of the perfect flounder bottom.

These kids are living proof of the Skiff Life; they live it every day, and I think they could probably catch a fish out of a mud puddle.

Suddenly, Austin’s line gets tight and after a short tussle, he’s got a nice flattie next to the boat. Unfortunately, I forgot the landing net… but after a brief boat-side fiasco, We somehow manage to fling the flounder into the boat.

Malachy decided to go artificial, opting for a 1/2-ounce C & H Alien Jig tipped with a 31/2-inch Fishbites Paddle tail.

As he lets the cast fly, he turns and says “Flounder love these things,” with a sly grin.

Within seconds, he’s hooked up!

“It’s not a big fish,” says Malachy, “But hey, it’s a flounder! And I called it.”

The next hour passes quickly, landing a few mangrove snapper, then it’s Brandon’s turn.

While slowly working his finger mullet back to the boat, the fish slams his bait and the drag screams.

This isn’t any flounder!” exclaimed Brandon.

In no time, Brandon has a nice redfish boat side. With heavy thunderstorms rolling in, we had to call the trip short and put the boat on the trailer. But I enjoyed my payback trip, fishing with the guys, in their element. And I felt like a kid again. It was a great way to break in my new Carolina Skiff 218 DLV.

Is Social Media Still Growing?

It was in 1999, Bill Gates wrote a book titled, “Business @ the Speed of Thought.” Within these pages, the man who became the computer world’s wizard made massively bold predictions that, at the time, sounded ridiculous and outrageous to those who read them. But when you look at how the social media realm has grown over the past few decades, it is important to take note that not only did his predictions from 1999 come true, but they are also responsible for seeing social media continue to grow by leaps and bounds to this day.
