Tidewater Steps in a New Direction
by Ted Lund
With its new 2500 Carolina Bay, Tidewater Boats is breaking the mold and entering the era of stepped-hull vessels.
“We really wanted to join the stepped-hull bay boat segment of the market, but safety was paramount to us,” says Tidewater’s vice president of sales and marketing, Jai Couture. “It was very important to us that the boat perform safely throughout all RPM ranges, but that owners didn’t need to be professional boat racers to drive it.”
To help develop the revolutionary new hybrid, Tidewater turned to one of the best in the business: Brian Forehand.
“Brian holds the world record monohull speed record at 180.74 mph,” says Couture. “He did a lot of developmental work with several leading speed boat manufacturers, including Outerlimits and Fountain Powerboats. When Tidewater decided to jump into this segment, we sought out the best to make sure we got this right the first time.”
Forehand worked with Tidewater’s Jimmy Metts and Chris Martin on the design.
The 2500 Carolina Bay is a large, stepped-bottom hull bay boat that positions itself with some of the other high-end bay boat manufacturers without the expense.
Taping out at 25 feet, 2 inches, the 2500 features a solid nine-foot beam.
Stepped hulls have gained favor in offshore and nearshore bay boat hybrids in recent years, after becoming the gold standard in offshore racing. Stepped hulls reduce drag by breaking up or aerating the running surface of the hull. This results in higher speeds based on conventional power as well as increased fuel efficiency.
Tidewater’s 2500 Carolina Bay is a full-featured boat with standard offerings, including electronic tilt power steering, hydraulic jackplate and trim tabs. Fishermen will appreciate the twin 30-gallon livewells, Tidewater’s built-in Icehouse cooler and lockable, undergunawale rod storage. Ample storage is provided in the bow, as well as a below-deck anchor locker and integrated below deck bucket storage.
While Tidewater is still dialing in the performance specifications on the Tidewater 2500 Carolina Bay, the maximum
rated horsepower is projected to be 350-hp V-6, fed by a standard 75-gallon fuel cell. For owners opting for reliable, efficient four-stroke power from Yamaha, the state of the art 6YC Information Station Digital Gauge is standard.
Like the entire Tidewater family, the 2500 Carolina Bay also features all-composite, no wood construction with fiberglass stringers and a hand-laid fiberglass hull. Each boat is rigged to AYBC standards and backed by a 10-year transferable hull warranty.
